IL 47 Reconstruction

HEI was selected by IDOT District 3 to provide Phase II preliminary engineering services for the $84.6M reconstruction/expansion of 11.5 miles of IL 47 from just north of I-80 on the north side of Morris, IL to Caton Farm Road north of Morris, IL. The project was initiated to address future growth, increase capacity, and improve safety. The project consisted of widening the existing two lane pavement to a four lane cross section with a 32’ median. The southern portion of the project was reconstructed to an urban cross section to include curb and gutter and storm sewer. The northern portion has a rural cross-section with shoulders, ditches, and median cable guardrail system. The project included a shift in horizontal alignment and improved vertical alignment and corresponding large earthwork balances, major drainage changes, and utility relocations including water main relocations.
Structure work included the construction of the two bridges carrying IL 47 over local creeks and cross road 18 box culverts. Four signalized intersections were included in the project along with roadway lighting on the urban cross section. The 11.5 mile project was constructed in two separate construction contracts that required the development of two separate sets of plans and specifications for state lettings. Detailed traffic management plans were developed to ensure uninterrupted access to the Saratoga School located along the corridor.
HEI performed Phase II engineering services for the two separate projects including survey, roadway realignment design, intersection design, guardrail design, maintenance of traffic plans, pavement design for PCC pavement and shoulders, bridge and box culvert design, drainage/storm sewer design, stormwater management design, traffic signal design, roadway lighting design, utility coordination including relocation coordination, and the development of plans, specifications, & estimates for state lettings.
