TR 382 over Coal Creek

HEI was selected by the LaSalle County Highway Department to provide Phase I and II engineering services for the replacement of the single span PPC deck beam structure carrying Township Road 382 over Covel Creek. The project is located approximately 5.5 miles east - southeast of Grand Ridge, Illinois or approximately one mile south of County Highway 6 (Mazon Road) on East 23rd Road. TR 382 (E 23rd Road) is a non-urban local road with an ADT of 25.
The existing structure had been closed to traffic due to problems with the backfill of the closed abutments. The backfill was continuing to wash out and leave holes in the roadway at the approaches to the bridge. In addition, several of the timber piling had been repaired previously and were continuing to cause problems with the structural load rating of the bridge.
The scope of the project involved the replacement of the single span PPC deck beam structure with a triple barrel 11-foot by 11-foot cast in place reinforced concrete box culvert. The new culvert is 39 feet 3 inches out to out of headwalls and is skewed 30 degrees. HEI was responsible for all aspects of the Phase I and II engineering design for this project. The construction of this culvert utilized federal funding which triggered additional project coordination with the Federal Highway Administration.
