Broadway St. Bridge Project
Streator, IL - Completed in 2008

Broadway St. Bridge / Train

The Broadway St. Bridge project featured all three phases of contractual involvement from our firm. From initial studies and design to observing and managing the construction contract for the client, Lasalle County.

The job itself featured a three-span structure over several BNSF Railroad tracks and a city street. To span these obstacles and still maintain the minimum amount of disturbed area possible, Mechanically Stabilized Earth Retaining Walls were used. With a minimum clearance of 24' required by BNSF over its tracks, and the limited amount of terminal distance due to the close proximity of the city streets surrounding the project, the abutments needed to be nearly 20' above ground level. Encasing the abutments in retaining walls was found to be the most viable and cost effective option.

Broadway St. Bridge / Train / Residential Areas

Along with the nearly 400' bridge and over 25,000 sq. ft. of retaining walls, the reconstruction of three city streets and two frontage roads along Broadway Street was performed. The previously asphalted roadways were replaced with a new storm sewer system and subbase that was capped with 9 1/2" PCC jointed pavement.

New ADA accessible sidewalks were installed leading to, over, and away from the structure. The final touches to the contract included installing handrail, fencing, and new lighting for the structure and its approaches, and laying sod throughout all the residential areas.

The success of the this project was expedited through the involvement of the City of Streator's public works department, input from state and county officials, and the communication and conflict resolution by our staff. Couple this with an aggressive schedule and quality work performed by the contractor, Stark Excavating Inc., and the result was a contract that was completed 9 months ahead of schedule.
